ALPINE — Education startup Degreed has been accepted into the Kaplan EdTech Accelerator, a mentoring program powered by business incubator TechStars.

The three-month program is a joint venture between Kaplan, Inc. and TechStars in which 10 startup companies will receive mentoring and businesses development consulting.

Degreed will be moving its operations to Kaplan’s EdTech Accelerator offices in New York. Kaplan will provide office space, facilities and resources.TechStars will invest $20,000.

The education startup wants to “jailbreak” the college degree by providing people with a way to measure education outside of formal instruction.

Degreed is a web app where users can display their education from both formal and informal sources. Formal sources include undergraduate degrees or technical training, while informal refers to sites like Codecademy, Lynda.com and Coursera. The app measures accreditation based on “mastery points,” which acts an aggregated score of all your education.

“Our objective is to make everything you do roll up into the context of degree, degree equivalents, roles and skills,” David Blake, chief executive of Degreed, said in an earlier interview. ”We feel like there is a lot of power in the context of the degree. We feel like the other context that matters is employment, skills and job titles.”
